Cholesterol tests: LDL, HDL and what to ask your doctor

Blog Cholesterol

A lipid profile is a simple blood test, often done after a short fast. It shows four numbers:

  • LDL (“bad”) cholesterol — the one that builds up in the arteries
  • HDL (“good”) cholesterol — helps clear cholesterol away
  • Triglycerides — fats that rise with sugar, sweets and alcohol
  • Total cholesterol — all of the above together

What is a good LDL?

It depends on your overall risk. For many healthy adults below 100 mg/dL is reasonable; people with diabetes or heart disease usually need much lower targets. Ask your doctor what your own target is.

Questions to ask

  • What is my personal heart risk?
  • What should my LDL target be?
  • Can I lower it with lifestyle changes alone, or do I need a tablet?
  • When should I repeat the test?
