Chest pain: when to worry and when to wait

Blog Chest Pain

Chest pain can come from the heart, the lungs, the stomach, the muscles or even stress. Knowing the warning signs helps you act quickly when it matters.

Call 999 straight away if the pain

  • Feels heavy, tight or crushing
  • Spreads to the arm, jaw, neck or back
  • Comes with sweating, nausea or breathlessness
  • Lasts more than ten minutes or keeps coming back

Book a check soon if

  • You get tightness when walking fast or climbing stairs that eases with rest
  • You have new pain and risk factors such as diabetes, smoking or high cholesterol
  • You simply cannot stop worrying about it

A proper assessment — usually a history, an ECG and sometimes a stress test — gives you a clear answer, and peace of mind.
